Meet the Editors

Charles H. Noble and Stephanie M. Noble took over the editorship of JAMS as of June 1, 2024. In this editorial, the new editorial team introduces themselves, provides updates, and outlines their vision for the journal. Additionally, in our interview with the editors, Charles and Stephanie share more about their backgrounds, personal insights, and aspirations for the future of JAMS.

For our Meet the Editors section, I asked them a mix of professional and personal questions—check out their thoughtful and engaging responses:

  1. What excites you most about your role as the EIC for JAMS?

Charles: I am excited about the opportunity to help guide one of the leading journals in our discipline and to engage the rich network of scholars around the world who make up the JAMS community!

Stephanie: While there are many exciting things about being EIC, helping authors navigate the review process, so that their best work gets accepted, is at the top of that list.  JAMS has given me so much in my career and my hope is that I can give back to this journal and community in this regard.

2. What is the most surprising thing you have learned while editing the journal?

Charles: I have learned that there is a large and excellent group of scholars who look at JAMS as their journal of choice and often build projects from the start with our journal in mind.

Stephanie: The most surprising thing I’ve learned is just how many people are needed to make a journal successful. Here are just a few: back office help at Springer, typesetters, AMS leadership, our fabulous managing editor Laurie, our co-editors, reviewers, ERB, authors, etc. There are so many people working to make JAMS successful.

3. What trends or topics in marketing research do you find particularly fascinating right now?

Charles: Certainly, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is on the minds of many scholars – both as a research topic and as an aid in conducting research.  For the former, we have much to learn about how humans will interact with AI to enhance and perform marketing activities.  Research has much to offer in deepening that understanding and I believe JAMS will be at the forefront of that work.

Stephanie: I can’t really say I find only one fascinating.  I really like reading manuscripts that are well written and can draw me into their story.  If the story is good, any topic can be fascinating.

4. How do you stay motivated and inspired in your professional life?

Charles: Well, first, my co-editor-in-chief motivates and inspires me every day!  She is not only a world class scholar but brings a compassion to her editorial duties that makes for a better author experience and a better journal.  Beyond that, it is easy to be excited about seeing the great new work coming to the journal and the energy and ideas coming from bright scholars.

Stephanie: I work with great co-authors and colleagues who keep me inspired. My advice to others is surround yourself with people you like to work with on a daily basis and that will help you stay motivated – at least this has worked for me!

5. What’s your favorite way to unwind after a busy day of work?

Charles: Our children (4) still keep us busy so spending time with them is my highest priority.  When I can find a little extra time, I like to practice some woodworking (furniture making), motorcycle riding, and any activities on the water!

Stephanie: With four kids and work I’m not the best at unwinding - there is always something to do!  However, if I had to pick something it would be going for walks or watching the evening news.

6. If you weren’t in academia, what career path would you have chosen?

Charles: Probably an architect, movie producer, or real estate developer!

Stephanie: Either something in marketing research (which is where I started before getting a Ph.D.) or something in earth/planetary sciences. I can watch NOVA for hours when it has to do with the formation of our solar system, the history of the Earth, etc. It’s a guilty pleasure of mine.
